Bausano’s four point night leads Wolverines over Deacons

2017-01-22

Eric Bausano finished Saturday night with four points as the Calumet Wolverines downed the De Pere Deacons 7-3 in Great Lakes Hockey League play. It was the second game of the weekend for the Wolverines, who were bested 3-2 Friday night against the league-leading Fond du Lac Bears.

The Wolverines (7-8-0) came out flying against the Bears, jumping out to a 1-0 lead through one period on a marker Alex VanWagner. The Wolverines held a 17-10 shot advantage and seemed on their way to upset the visiting Bears (11-2-0).

However, the Bears bounced back with vengeance in the second period, taking complete control of the game and keeping the Wolverines to a season-low four shots on goal as they stormed out to a 3-1 lead.

Bausano setup Jeff Erkkila for a goal with three minutes remaining in the game. The Wolverines had two golden opportunities to tie it in the final minute, but the home team couldn’t connect. Ryan Patrick made 34 saves in the contest.

Saturday the Wolverines jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with goals by Erkkila and Logan Frantti, but De Pere’s Marc Belanger answered with two goals of his own. The two teams entered the period break tied at two.

This time it was the Wolverines who broke out in the second period as Bausano and Byron Parks scored, while Chris Hoffman notched a pair of goals. Zach Babcock completed the scoring early in the third period. Bryan Miller got the win with 28 saves.

The Wolverines are back at home on Friday and Saturday of next weekend to take on Upper Peninsula rivals - the Marquette Mutineers.
