Wolverines escape road weekend with one point
2016-02-07The Calumet Wolverines suffered a pair of one-goal road losses this weekend, falling to the Eagle River Falcons 8-7 in overtime Friday and Portage Lake Pioneers 7-6 Saturday.
Calumet (7-9-1) jumped out to an early advantage Friday in Eagle River and held a one- or two-goal lead for the vast majority of the game, but the Falcons (7-9-0) kept clawing their way back with the support of a huge crowd thanks to the USA Hockey Pond Hockey National Championships that were also being hosted in town that weekend.
With less than two minutes to go the Falcons finally caught fire, cutting a two-goal lead to one and then tying the game up with 30 seconds left. In the final minute of overtime the home team sealed the victory, handing the Wolverines the team’s first OT loss of the year.
Logan Rastello paced the Wolverines with two goals and three points while Dan Perrault, Eric Bausano and Joe Hyrkas each had a pair of points. Ryan Patrick made 34 saves.
Saturday the Wolverines once again jumped out to an early lead, but the Pioneers (13-4-0) bounced back with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead after two periods.
The Wolverines chipped away at the lead, cutting it to 4-3 early in the third. Portage Lake jumped back out front by a couple goals thanks to two short-handed markers. Calumet once again got to work, cutting the lead to 7-6 with five minutes to go, but the team in blue couldn’t find the equalizer.
Byron Parks and Mike Babcock each had two goals in the game, the third of four regular-season games between the two Copper Country rivals. An official scoresheet has not been posted yet by the Pioneers.
The Wolverines will be at the Colosseum next weekend taking on the Mosinee Papermakers Friday at 7:30 p.m.
