Ryan Patrick looks out during the second period of the Wolverines 8-3 loss to West Bend. Patrick allowed only one goal in the period, but the Wolverines offense couldn't make up any ground.

sh Harju, Ty Harju and Isaac Bjorn scored, but the Calumet Wolverines slow start doomed the home squad as the Great Lakes Hockey League South Division-leading West Bend Bombers defeated the Wolverines 8-3 Saturday night.

The Bombers (13-3-1) scored four in the first period, including a hat trick by the team’s leading scorer Scott Holtz. Calumet (8-10-2) kept the shots close (18-16), but couldn’t solve the Bombers goaltender in the first period.

After the Bombers scored their third shorthanded goal of the game five minutes into the second period, Calumet finally gained some footing, scoring three of the next four goals. The first was a one-timer by Josh Harju off a feed from Byron Parks.

Isaac Bjorn buried a rebound early in the third period, and Ty Harju’s one timer midway through the third cut the lead to 6-3. The third goal came on a beautiful pass from the corner by veteran forward Josh Harju.

Following the Ty Harju goal, the Bombers added two more to clinch the game. The team’s split the season series, with the Wolverines earning a 6-0 victory in West Bend in December. Calumet owns a 10-2-0 advantage all time over the Bombers, who joined the GLHL in 2008.

Calumet is home for back-to-back two-game weekends beginning next Friday with a visit from the Fox Cities Ice Dogs. Next Friday’s game will feature $2 entry for adults, and $1 entry for seniors and children.
