The Calumet Wolverines fell 5-4 in overtime Saturday night to the De Pere Deacons to finish their Great Lakes Hockey League season on a six-game point streak.
Calumet finished the season with a 13-10-3 record, good for third in the GLHL North Division, and either the fifth or sixth seed as Wolverines prepare for the GLHL playoffs. That will begin April 4 in Fond du Lac, Wisconson. The schedule will be released March 30.
The Wolverines head into the most important weekend of the season next week as the team will battle for the historic Gibson Cup in a best-of-three series with cross-town rival Portage Lake Pioneers. The series begins Thursday night at 7:30 at Dee Stadium, then Friday in Calumet at 7:30, and will conclude Saturday at the Dee if a third game is needed.
The Wolverines 5-4 loss to De Pere came despite a 66-20 shot advantage. Alex VanWagner had a goal and an assist in the game.
Calumet traveled to Eagle River Friday night and earned a 6-5 victory over the Falcons. Logan Rastello netted his fourth of the game with four seconds left to extend the Wolverines winning streak to five games. Jeff Erkkila had a goal and three assists, and Eric Basauno added a goal and two assists.
