Wolverines earn No. 5 seed - start playoffs Friday night
2014-03-31The Calumet Wolverines earned the No. 5 seed in the Great Lakes Hockey League, and are paired up with North Division Rivals De Pere and Portage Lake for next weekend’s playoffs.
The Wolverines will play at 5:30 CDT Friday against the No. 8 seed Deacons. Calumet (13-10-3) finished 2-0-2 against the Deacons this season. De Pere finished 9-14-3, and were led by goaltender Dave Eland. Eland had six games where he faced more than 50 shots, including a 62-save performance in Calumet in late March.
The Wolverines will then face a familiar rival, the Portage Lake Pioneers on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CDT. The Pioneers finished the season 20-6-0, earning the North Division crown. The Pioneers defeated the Wolverines in 6 out of the 7 times they played this year.
The GLHL playoffs feature all nine teams this year, with teams split into three groupings. The top seed from each grouping will earn a berth in the semifinals, and one wild card team will also earn a spot. The tournament will be played in Fond du Lac, Wis.
