Wolverines season ends with loss to Portage Lake
2014-04-05The fifth-seeded Calumet Wolverines finished the round-robin portion of the Great Lakes Hockey League playoffs in the fifth spot, losing a tiebreaker to Mosinee to earn a spot in the semifinals.
Calumet defeated the De Pere Deacons 5-1, and lost to the Portage Lake Pioneers 6-2 in the tournament. Mosinee, who also went 1-1, won the tiebreaker with a +1 goal differential.
In the Wolverines win over De Pere, Mike Babcock scored two goals, while Jack Maccani, Josh Harju and Logan Rastello added one each. Ryan Patrick made 26 saves to earn the win.
The Pioneers earned a 2-0 lead with back-to-back power-play goals early in the first period. The second-seeded Pioneers tacked on another before the end of the first period. Two more Pios goals in the second meant the Wolverines had to dig out of a 5-0 hole.
Alex VanWagner scored on a nice feed from Zach Babcock to bring the Wolverines within four early in the third, and after a Portage Lake goal, Harju netted his second of the tournament to keep the Wolverines goal differential at zero.
Calumet outshot Portage Lake 37-30 in the contest, but was bettered for the seventh time in eight contests this season.
The Wolverines finished the year with a 15-13-3 record, including a 13-10-3 record during the regular season.
