Historic Gibson Cup Series Starts April 2 in Calumet

2021-04-01

One of the oldest trophies all of hockey will be up for grabs in early April as the Calumet Wolverines and Portage Lake Pioneers play a best-of-three-game series for what’s referred to as the Stanley Cup of the North.

The 2021 Gibson Cup schedule is as follows:
  • Friday, April 2, 7:30 p.m. at Calumet Colosseum
  • Saturday, April 3, 7:30 p.m. at Dee Stadium
  • Tuesday, April 6, 7:30 p.m. at Calumet Colosseum (if needed)
The series, which was featured in a 2016 documentary-style tv show on VICELAND titled “The Perfect Sheet,” is a battle for the Gibson Cup. The Gibson Cup is the 3rd oldest hockey cup in the United States, only behind the 1893 Stanley Cup and the 1913 MacNaughton Cup.

For decades the Cup has been battled for between these two bitter Copper Country rivals, and this year the teams are anxious to get back after it after the Cup was not awarded in 2020 because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Fans will be allowed to enter both arenas, with a capacity of 375 people to adhere with the current Epidemic Order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Any fans who enter are required to wear a mask in all public space and are asked to maintain a safe distance. If anyone is showing any symptoms of COVID-19 they are asked to remain home.

For those who do not attend the games in person, they are invited to listen to the live broadcasts of the game courtesy of Houghton Community Broadcasting. All games will be broadcast on FM radio via K-Bear 102.3 FM and online at kbear102.com. They can also be watched online via LiveBarn.
