Wolverines fall in OT of Superior Cup championship

2019-10-27

The Portage Lake Pioneers power play was dangerous during the inaugural Superior Cup tournament in Marquette, and it ended up being the ticket to a winning weekend as they scored a 4-on-3 power-play goal with a minute remaining in overtime to earn the trophy with a 6-5 win over the Calumet Wolverines.

The Wolverines got on the board first in the title game, owning a 2-0 lead late into the second frame. That’s when fortunes changed for the Wolverines as they missed two open nets to jump to a 3-0 lead, and then found themselves down 3-2 going into the third when the Pioneers scored three goals in less than five minutes.

Calumet bounced back, tying the score at 3, 4 and eventually a Logan Rastello score with two minutes left forced overtime.

In total, the Pioneers were three-for-three on the game and four-for-four on the weekend with the man advantage. Portage Lake defeated Marquette in the first semifinal game to get to the championship, while Izaak Avery’s hat trick led the way for the Wolverines with a 6-3 win over Mosinee Friday night.

The Wolverines, now 1-2-1 in exhibition play, are home this upcoming weekend for regular season GLHL games against the Fox Cities Ice Dogs Friday and Mosinee Papermakers Saturday.
