Wolverines win back-to-back Gibson Cup championships
2019-04-07The Calumet Wolverines won game 3 of the 2019 Gibson Cup series 6-5 to clinch their second straight Gibson Cup championship.
James Brey scored three goals, including two in the first period, to help the Calumet Wolverines clinch their second straight Gibson Cup championship.
The Wolverines owned a 2-0 lead after a period in the deciding game, but the Portage Lake Pioneers battled back to tie the game at 2 in the second period before Rory Anderson scored in the final minutes of the second frame.
The Pioneers immediately tied it up in the third period, but Eric Bausano put the Wolverines back up 4-3. The Pioneers scored again, and this time it was Logan Rastello who answered to put the Wolverines back up by 1 with eight minutes left. Jimmy Brey finished his hat trick with less than five minutes left, and despite a late goal by the Pioneers, the Wolverines held on.
The Pioneers shocked the Wolverines with a 5-4 overtime win Friday night, but the Wolverines bounced back with a 6-1 win Saturday at the Dee.
The game completes the Wolverines 2018-19 season. The team finished 22-6-2, winning the Gibson Cup and the GLHL Regular Season.
