Wolverines fall in GLHL semifinals

2019-03-31

The Wolverines fell 4-3 Saturday night in overtime to end their hopes at winning the 2019 GLHL tournament championship.

Pool play went well for the Calumet Wolverines in the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament as they allowed one goal in two games, but the fun ended in overtime of the semifinals as the Fox Cities Ice Dogs punched their ticket to the championship game, a game they’d eventually win in overtime against the host Mosinee Papermakers.

Calumet defeated Eagle River 6-1 Friday night behind a 40-save effort by Ian Carroll. Eric Bausano paced the Wolverines in that game with two goals and three points, while Rory Anderson and Austin Riipi added two points each.

Saturday morning the fun continued with a 5-0 victory over De Pere. Goaltender Ryan Patrick pitched a shutout in the contest, his first of the season. He made 44 saves in the contest. Matt Yeo, Logan Rastello and Jeff Erkkila each had two points in the game.

The Wolverines found themselves down 2-0 early in the second period against the Ice Dogs, but clawed right back into the game with goals by Mike Babcock and Josh Harju. The Dogs regained the lead late in the third period, but Logan Rastello struck three minutes later to force overtime.
