Babcock nets hat trick as Calumet wins big over Fox Cities

2019-03-10

The Calumet Wolverines owned a 1-0 lead less than a minute in and never looked back as they defeated the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 8-1 Friday night at the Calumet Colosseum.

Mike Babcock led the way with three goals, while Ian Carroll earned his fifth win of the season, tying Ryan Patrick for second in the Great Lakes Hockey League.

The first goal of the game was scored by Brendan Jacques on a deflection of a Jeff Erkkila shot. Rory Anderson and Logan Rastello also scored first period markers as Calumet went into the first break up 3-1. Babcock and Ed Beiring added goals in the third period before Anderson added a sixth early in the third and Babcock secured the hat trick with two goals in a shift near the end of the contest. Babcock finished with four points, while Anderson, Rastello, Erkkila and Jacques each had three points. Jack Sturos added two assists, and Carroll finished with 23 saves.

The Wolverines are now 10-4-0 on the season with the team’s home finale scheduled for March 22 against Marquette, and season finale the next night in Eagle River.

Mosinee won a pair of games over the weekend, and West Bend defeated Fond du Lac at home, meaning the three teams are still in a dead sprint to the finish tied with four losses each. The Wolverines own the tiebreaker over Mosinee and in a three-way tie, but the Bombers would top Calumet if the tie was between only those two teams.
