Patrick stops 62 in vintage performance as Calumet beats Mosinee

2019-03-03

Ryan Patrick was eating up everything coming his way Saturday night at the Mosinee Rec Center as he led the Calumet Wolverines to a 6-1 victory over the Mosinee Papermakers by making 62 saves on 63 shots.

Logan Rastello put the team on his back in the first period with two goals in an evenly played frame. The two goals move Rastello to a league-leading 19 on the season.   From there, the Papermakers took control of the contest. They outshot Calumet 46-15 in the final two periods. The ‘Makers cut the lead in half six minutes into the second period, but Patrick and the Wolverines slammed the door from there.

Stephen Dudenas had his second two-point night of the season with a beauty of a breakaway goal and an apple on a Matt Yeo blast late in the second period. Jimmy Brey had a goal and two assists, while Mike Babcock and Josh Harju each had two points.

The win was a huge one for Calumet’s hopes of winning its second straight regular season championship as it moved the team ahead of Mosinee in the standings. Those two teams and West Bend each have four losses, with West Bend (10-4-0) having two games left, Calumet (9-4-0) three games left and Mosinee (8-4-0) four games left. If all three teams win out, Calumet will earn the No. 1 seed by virtue of a better record against those two teams. The Wolverines also hold the tiebreaker over Mosinee in head-to-head, but West Bend owns the tiebreaker over Calumet in head-to-head.

The Wolverines next game is at home Friday night against the fourth-place Fox Cities Ice Dogs, who earned a win over Calumet during a February matchup in Appleton.
