Deacons downed as Wolverines stay hot at Colosseum

2019-02-24

The Calumet Wolverines celebrated Hockey Week in Calumet in style as they defeated the De Pere Deacons 7-2 Saturday night to move to 8-4-0 in GLHL play.

Including exhbition games, the Wolverines are now 9-0-0 at the Colosseum this year. The win gives the Wolverines a season sweep over the up-and-coming Deacons (4-6-1).

The end result didn't look likely in the first few minutes as the Deacons held a 1-0 lead two minutes in and peppered goaltener Ian Carroll with four shots over the opening five minutes. Calumet then put the clamps down with 30 of the next 40 shots to hold a 3-1 lead after one period and 7-2 lead after two periods.

Rookie defensemen Stephen Dudenas scored his first goal as a Wolverine on his way to a two-point night, Rory Anderson had two goals and three points and 13 total players got on the scoresheet.

Carroll made 33 saves in the game, including 14 in the third period while the Wolverines killed back-to-back-to-back penalties to keep the Deacons at bay. The Wolverines travel to Mosinee next Saturday to play against the Papermakers (7-3-0). Earlier this season the Wolverines took care of business against Mosinee at home, but it was a rare misstep for the 'Makers. The team has suffered only three regular-season losses to lead the GLHL.

Calumet's next home game is Friday, March 8 as they look to avenge a road loss to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs (7-5-0).
