Wolverines lose during emotional night for Marquette hockey community
2019-02-10More than $5,000 was raised for a family who lost two young men as the Wolverine and Marquette Mutineers played a GLHL game with Marquette winning 8-6 Friday night at Lakeview Arena.
It was an emotional night in Marquette as the lone survivor of a deadly car crash, Kyle Johnson, came out for the ceremonial puck drop Friday night before the Wolverines and Marquette Mutineers did battle. When the night was done, the Mutineers escaped with a 8-6 victory, but more importnaly the two teams, hundreds of fans, local businesses and other GLHL teams raised more than $5,000 for the family.
In the hockey game the Mutineers jumped out to a 3-2 lead after a period and held a commanding 6-3 lead heading into teh third period. Early in the final frame, the home team added one more. That's when things started to turn for the Wolverines as Marquette native Austin Riipi got the team excited with a fight and the Wolverines scored three goals in less than five minutes to climb within one. Marquette secured an empty netter to clinch the victory.
Logan Rastello had three goals and an assist to pace the Wolverines. Ed Beiring had three points and Rory Anderson finished with a pair of points.
