The home fans got some free hockey Saturday night as the Calumet Wolverines beat the Eagle River Falcons 4-3 in overtime at the Calumet Colosseum. The victory finished off a big weekend of home wins as the Wolverines also toppled the Fond du Lac Bears 8-5 Friday night.

The Wolverines (6-2-0) jumped all over the Fond du Lac Bears (4-5-0) Friday earning a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes, but the visitors made it a contest by scoring the next three goals. Calumet regained a three-goal lead with a pair of Logan Rastello goals, but Fondy was back within one after a power-play goal two minutes into the final frame. Rastello finished his hat trick midway through the third on a shorthanded marker and Eric Bausano iced it with 4:25 left.

Ryan Patrick made 34 saves in the win. Rastello had a four point night, while Rory Anderson and Maxx Fredrickson each had playmakers. Josh Larson, Mike Babcock and Jeff Erkkila each had two-point nights.  Saturday’s contest was the exact opposite as the shorthanded Eagle River Falcons (3-4-2) had all the first-period jump. Jake Robinson had two goals and an assist as the visitors built up a 3-1 lead heading into the second period. That’s all the goals they would score though as Ian Carroll stood strong in net stopping the final 23 shots he faced.

Jimmy Brey scored two second-period markers to tie the game, and newcomer Brendan Jacques scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of overtime to send the crowd home happy. Anderson again earned a playmaker in the contest, and now has nine points in his last three games. Rastello’s assist gives him a five-game point streak, and his team-leading 18 points is good for sixth in the Great Lakes Hockey League.  GLHL Standings - February 3, 2019The Wolverines jumped from sixth up to a tie for second in the GLHL standings with the four-point weekend.

Next weekend the Wolverines will travel to Marquette to take on the Mutineers for the first time this season. This game will be dedicated to Will, Jake, and Kyle Johnson. All proceeds from the ticket sales will be given to their family, as well as 50/50 raffle. A member of the Johnson family will be performing an honorary puck drop, and we will have a short ceremony following the game to present all donations to the Johnsons. The Wolverines next home game is Friday, February 15 against the league-leading West Bend Bombers.
