Tight to the end as Wolverines top Pioneers
2019-01-06Jake Anderson scored the game-winning goal as the Calumet Wolverines defeated the Portage Lake Pioneers 3-1 Saturday night at Dee Stadium.
The game was tightly contested throughout with the Wolverines owning a 1-0 lead heading into the third period on a first period rebound goal scored by Brendan Middleton. Middlton found the rebound off a point shot by Stephen Dudenas.
The Wolverines lead was doubled early in the third period when Anderson picked up a puck and came across the top of the crease with a backhander.
The Pioneers didn't quit, eventually cutting the lead to one and pressuring heavily through the last five minutes. The game was iced when Jack Sturos scored an empty netter as the buzzer rang.
Ryan Patrick earned the win in net and now leads the GLHL in save percentage and goals against average. The Wolverines are now 3-0 in GLHL play and 8-2 overall. The team is off next weekend before traveling to play at West Bend and Fond du Lac the following week.
