Wolverines host Pioneers Saturday in regular season home opener

2018-12-27

After seven-game exhibition season, including four against Portage Lake, the Calumet Wolverines will open the home portion of their regular season schedule Saturday night against the Portage Lake Pioneers.

During the 2017-18 season the Calumet Wolverines took a major step forward as they came out of the gate hot en route to winning the team's first Great Lakes Hockey League regular season in more than 15 years, and to start the 2018-19 season Calumet is off to a hot start.  The team is 1-0-0 in GLHL play with a win on the road in De Pere and 6-2-0 overall, including owning a 3-1-0 record against the team's biggest rivals in Portage Lake. The Wolverines will look to continue that streak Saturday night as the host the Pioneers for the final time before the 2019 Gibson Cup series.

The Wolverines hot start is due to many of the same players who carried the team to a regular season title last year as Logan Rastello leads the team with 11 goals and 18 points through five games. Rory Anderson has 16 points for second best on the team, and fellow second-year forward Matt Yeo has broken out with the new season to put up 10 points through eight games.

Defensemen Josh Harju and Jimmy Brey are also contributing offensively, with Harju putting up better than a point a game and Brey adding four goals in six games.

Several newcomers have impressed off the bat as well. Josh Larson has five points in five games and Justin Dudenas three points in two games. Other newcomers Jake Anderson, Izaak Avery, Brendan Middleton, Davin Lehto and Brendan Jacques have also been contributing offensively.

In net the Wolverines have had three goaltenders play two or more games with Bryan Miller leading the team. He has let in only four goals on 57 shots in two victories. Ryan Patrick owns a save percentage just over .900 with a 3.00 goals against average as well.
