Wolverines and Papermakers split weekend

2018-12-16

The Calumet Wolverines escaped Saturday night at home with a 5-3 win over the Mosinee Papermakers to salvage a weekend split. The Makers won the series opener 6-2 on Friday night in a game played at Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse.

The split moves the Wolverines to 4-2-0 on the season as a whole, including a 1-0-0 record in Great Lakes Hockey League regular season action. The Papermakers are now 2-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in regular season play.   Mosinee jumped out to a 5-0 lead midway through the second period Friday night before Eddie Beiring got the Wolverines started. The Wolverines brought the score to within three midway through the third period on a marker from Matt Yeo, but it was all for nothing as the Papermakers scored late to seal the deal. Ian Carroll made 39 saves for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines earned a better outcome on Saturday night as the top line of Beiring, Rory Anderson and Logan Rastello scored three goals, including the winner halfway through the third period. Jimmy Brey and Tyler Loukus also added goals. Bryan Miller got the win with 33 saves in his season debut.

Calumet returns to action next weekend with a home-and-home with the Portage Lake Pioneers, starting Friday night with a game at the Calumet Colosseum.
