Shootout win leads to weekend split

2018-11-25

The Calumet Wolverines and Portage Lake Pioneers renewed hockey's oldest rivalry this weekend and split two tightly played contests.

The Pioneers came from behind on Friday night to defeat the Wolverines, who held a 2-1 lead midway through the second period on a goal from Stephen Dudenas, his first in a Wolverines uniform.

A similar storyline looked to be developing on Sunday in Calumet. Matt Yeo gave the Wolverines a 3-2 lead early in the third period on a penalty shot, setting the stage for a Pioneers comeback. Matt Zerbst and Tyler Bailey scored 30 seconds apart to give the visitors the lead.

However, this time the Wolverines bounced back. Chris Hoffman tied the game at 4 with 30 second left on a beautiful feed from Rory Anderson. It was Anderson's third point of the night. The teams then went into an eight-round shootout before Josh Larson scored the eventual winner.

Both games were exhibition for the two teams. Calumet's next game is Friday, December 7 at Mosinee, before playing their first GLHL game of the year on Saturday, December 8 at De Pere. The Wolverines and Pioneers next meet for a home-and-home Dececember 21-22.
