Wolverines a win away from earning League Championship

2018-03-04

The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Mosinee Papermakers 8-4 Friday and West Bend Bombers 4-2 Saturday and are now one win away from winning the 2017-18 Great Lakes Hockey League regular-season championship.

The Wolverines (13-3-0) play at home Friday night against the Monroe Blues (4-12-0) and finish their season Saturday night at Eagle River (4-11-1). With a win in either game, the Wolverines would move into a tie with first-place West Bend (14-4-0), who the Wolverines would then beat in the tiebreaker (head-to-head). The Wolverines haven’t won a regular season championship since 2002.

Wolverines avenge loss to Papermakers with big third period

The Wolverines first loss of the season came on the road against the Mosinee Papermakers in January, a 10-1 beat down. The Wolverines had that in mind Friday night as they took down the ‘Makers at home.

Calumet owned a 3-1 lead after one, but the visitors kept with it and eventually tied the score at 3 midway through the second period. Austin Riipi scored late in the second to regain the lead, and the home squad poured it in on the third period with four markers to make the CopperDog 150-weekend crowd cheer.

Rory Anderson and Logan Rastello had three-point nights, while 13 total players tallied a point in the contest. Ian Carroll got the win with 37 saves. The rookie goaltender is now 4-2-0 in league play.

Calumet gets season sweep over four-time reigning champion Bombers

The West Bend Bombers came into the Calumet Colosseum looking for a win that would have clinched their fifth straight Great Lakes Hockey League regular season championship.

The visitors scored in the first minute, but Calumet bounced back with a goal of their own. In the second period it was the Wolverines who scored first, but again the score was tied uplater in the period. With 3:46 remaining in the second period Ed Beiring scored, and that ended up holding on as the game winner.

Logan Rastello and Rory Anderson each had three points in the game, while Josh Harju had a two-goal night. Ryan Patrick made 34 saves, and is now 6-1-0 on the season.
