Wolverines complete regular season sweep over U.P. teams

2018-02-17

The Calumet Wolverines took care of business against rivals from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this exhibition and regular season, winning all eight games against the Marquette Mutineers and Portage Lake Pioneers.

That includes the final game, a 6-5 overtime thriller as the Wolverines topped the league-leading Marquette Mutineers Friday night at the Calumet Colosseum. Cody Carlson was the hero in the game, giving him two game-winning goals against the Mutineers this season as he was the hero in Marquette on January 20 with a late third-period goal to lead the team to that win.

The game didn’t start out promising for the Wolverines, as the Mutineers came in and took control of the game early with a 3-0 lead 13 minutes into the contest. Calumet bounced back though with four straight goals, including power-play markers by Jeff Erkkila and Alex VanWagners and a two goal shift for the high performing line of Rory Anderson, Ed Beiring and Logan Rastello.

Calumet owned a 4-3 advantage heading into the third, but the Mutineers battled back with a tying goal midway through the period. It looked destined for overtime until Byron Parks picked up the puck off a faceoff and beat the Mutineers tender with only 2:11 left on the clock. With just 14 seconds left, Marquette tied the game to force overtime.

Beiring and Anderson each finished the game with three points, while Rastello and Eric Bausano had two points each. Rastello’s two points give him a team-leading 37 points in 12 games, good for fourth in the Great Lakes Hockey League. Ryan Patrick made 36 saves to earn his fourth win of the season.

The Mutineers earned one point in the loss to move them to 10-3-2, good for 22 points and a tie with the West Bend Bombers (11-2-0) for first place in the league. Calumet is two points back with a 10-2 record, which does not include the team’s 4-0-0 record in exhibition play.

The Wolverines are now done with regular season matchups against Marquette and Portage Lake, but still could play both teams in the GLHL Tournament and will compete in the annual Gibson Cup series against the Pioneers in late March.

The Wolverines hit the road next weekend, playing against the back-to-back-to-back-to-back regular season champion West Bend Bombers on Friday night and then the Fond du Lac Bears on Saturday night.
