Bad second periods dooms Wolverines against Fond du Lac
2018-02-04The Calumet Wolverines ended their home winning streak at five games Saturday night as they fell to the Fond du Lac Bears 7-5 at the historic Calumet Colosseum on the back of a second-period rush by the Bears that led to five goals.
The Wolverines got first period goals from Ed Beiring and Matt Yeo, and looked to be on the way to a big win as they were outshooting the visitors 19-11, but the good start didn't continue into the second period.
Instead the second period belonged to the Bears (7-4-0) who scored five goals, including three in a five minute span to give the Calumet Wovlerines (8-2-0) their first loss on home ice. Fond du Lac tallied 22 shots during the frame.
The Wolverines battled back to within one a couple times, but the Bears continued to answer with an onslaught of goals, including a power play and short handed marker.
Yeo finished the game with two goals and an assist. Yeo now has five goals and eight points in his last four games. Alex VanWagner and Eric Bausano both had a goal and an assist. Ian Carroll made 32 saves while suffering his second loss of the season.
The Wolverines are back at home on Saturday night as they welcome the De Pere Deacons (1-7-0) to town for a 7:30 p.m. start during Winter Carnival weekend.
