Home-and-home with Pioneers begins Friday

Off to an incredible 7-0-0 start, the Calumet Wolverines are looking continue that hot streak this weekend against the team’s bitter rivals, the Portage Lake Pioneers, in a home-and-home series. The teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Dee Stadium and 7:30 Saturday at the historic Calumet Colosseum.

Calumet currently sits fourth in the league with a 3-0-0 record, and is one of two teams without a loss to begin the season. Calumet has also defeated its U.P. rivals Marquette and Portage Lake twice each in exhibition play. The four wins in exhibition play lead all teams.
 
Ed Beiring continues to lead the Great Lakes Hockey League in goals (2) and points (4) per game, while Logan Rastello has the same amount of goals and sits assist behind. Those two, alogn with Rory Anderson are top three in scoring for exhibition games. First-year goaltender Ian Carroll is currently second in the league in goals against average (2.00) and save percentage (.910). He leads the league with one shutout. Bryan Miller is third in exhibition play in GAA (3.50) and save percentage (.900).
 
The Pioneers are 1-6-0 on the season, including a 1-4-0 mark in Great Lakes Hockey League play. Cody Sivonen leads the Pioneers with 11 points, his seven goals are tied for second in the league. Aaron Sturos is the team’s next leading scorer with three goals and six points in just two games. Phil Mattila leads the Pios in net with the eight best save percentage in the league at .866.
