Wolverines top Marquette to move to 5-0

2017-12-17

The Calumet Wolverines jumped out to another early lead and held on to finish as the team moved to 5-0-0 for the first time since at least 2005 with a 6-5 victory over the GLHL-leading Marquette Mutineers.

Trevor Johnson opened the scoring 3:13 into the contest, and Ed Beiring added a goal midway through the first. Logan Rastello answered a late Marquette (4-2-1 overall, 4-0-1 Great Lakes Hockey League) goal as the Wolverines (5-0-0, 3-0-0) led 3-1 after the first period. The shots in the first were 19-11, meaning the Wolverines were controlling play and hoping to continue that in the second.

Unfortunately for the home team, it didn’t work that way as Levi Jezek and Craig Hartz scored for Marquette, while Rastello added his second of the night and Calumet was only up 4-3 after two. That’s when Beiring turned it on, scoring two goals in the opening five minutes of the third period to give Calumet a seemingly unmatchable 6-3 lead with 15:16 left in the game.

Mutineers star forward Dallas McLaughlin cut the lead to two with 8:56 left, and with just over six minutes left the Mutineers cut the lead to just one. Prior to the goal that cut the lead to one, a melee broke out with James Brey and Brandon Smaby doing battle in front of Wolverines netminder Bryan Miller. Both served double minor penalties.

Rastello led the Wolverines with five points, while Beiring earned his second hat trick of the season in the contest. Rory Anderson continued to rack up the assists, piling on three. First-year defensemen Jack Sturos and Johnson each added two points. Miller earned the win with 26 saves in his season debut.

The Wolverines will return home on Friday night as they host the Portage Lake Pioneers. Game time is 7:30 p.m. as hockey’s oldest rivalry is renewed for the 2017-18 season.
