Wolverines hot start continues with wins over Mutineers and Ice Dogs

2017-12-10

The Calumet Wolverines defeated Marquette 9-5 Friday and Fox Cities 8-0 Saturday to move to 4-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in Great Lakes Hockey League action.

The Wolverines are off to a 4-0 start for the second straight season, but this time it's been a little bit different as the Wolverines have seen contributions from several key new comers, including forwards Ed Beiring and Rory Anderson, who have more than 10 points each, goaltender Ian Carroll who has a shutout and two wins in three apperances, and defensemen Jack Sturos, Troy Reuter and Trevor Johnson who have played big minutes in a shutdown role.

Meadowbrook Magic: Wolverines top Mutineers in L'Anse

In exhibition action the Wolverines put on a dominating performance against the Marquette Mutineers, winning 9-5 in the neutral-site game that served as a fundraiser for Meadowbrook Arena. The Wolverines jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, and held strong througout the second and third periods.

L'Anse natives Mike Turunen and Alex VanWagner made their first appearance in their home rink since high school, and for Turunen it was a memorable one as he earned a five minute major penalty, allowed only two goals in 30 minutes of action and earned the win in the game. Offensively the Wolverines were led by Rory Anderson's one goal and four points, Mike Babcock's hat trick, and three-point nights by Logan Rastello, Chuck Marcoe and Devin Smith.

Home debut a shutout for Ian Carroll and 2017-18 team

The Calumet Colosseum made for a friendly environment Saturday night as the Wolverines again jumped out to an early lead and finished strong in earning a season sweep over the Fox Cities Ice Dogs with the 8-0 win.

Ian Carroll earned the shutout in just his third appearance. The shutout is the Wolverines second in the last five seasons. Offensively the Wolverines were led by Logan Rastello's three goals and four points, while Jeff Erkkila, Logan Rastello, Tyler Loukus and Ed Beiring all had three-point nights.

Wolverines and Mutineers have home-and-home next weekend

The action will continue next weekend for the Calumet Wolverines as they play a home-and-home against the Marquette Mutineers. Friday night the teams will play at Lakeview Arena in Marquette at 7 p.m., and Saturday the action will go to the Calumet Colosseum for a 7:30 p.m. start.
