Rastello nets OT winner as Wolverines jump out to 2-0 start

2017-12-03

The Calumet Wolverines started the 2017-18 season out on a bang this weekend as they went on the road to beat the De Pere Deacons 7-4 and Fox Cities Ice Dogs 8-7 in overtime.

The Wolverines held a multi-goal lead nearly the entire game in De Pere on Friday night behind impressive efforts from rookies Ed Beiring and Rory Anderson. Beiring scored five goals and added an assist, while Anderson earned five assists. Fellow first-year goaltender Ian Carroll also stopped 19 shots in his debut.

It looked like the Wolverines were going to put on a dominating effort Saturday night when the visitor’s jumped out to a 5-1 lead in thie first period. Hoewever, the Ice Dogs never quit and slowly chipped away at the lead. After two periods it was 5-4, and despite a two-goal outburst early in the third, the Ice Dogs continued to claw back in and eventually tied the game in the final minute of regulation.

That just set the table for Logan Rastello, who scored about a minute into the extra frame to give the Wolverines a 2-0 start in Great Lakes Hockey League action for the second year in a row. Rastello and Beiring finished the game with two goals, while second-year forward Chris Hoffman was an assist away from a Gordie How Hat Trick after dropping the gloves during the second period with Ice Dogs captain Nick Laird. Ryan Patrick earned the win in net.

The Wolverines are back in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula next weekend. Friday they’ll play at beautiful Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse against the Marquette Mutineers and Saturday they’ll play their home opener against the Ice Dogs.
