The streak continues - Wolverines fall in game 3

2017-03-28

The Portage Lake Pioneers scored four third-period goals to keep their historic Gibson Cup championship streak alive, winning game 3 of the 2017 Gibson Cup Series by a score of 7-4.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, and weathered a hard push by the Pioneers in the second period to head into the third period with a 4-3 lead. The north-end squad held leads heading into the third period of all three games.

Through seven minutes, the Wolverines held strong to the lead. Then the Pioneers broke through. Connor Hannon scored to tie the game at four, then Mike Stevens scored the eventual winner on the team’s second power play opportunity of the game.  With four minutes left Aaron Sturos found the back of the net to give the Pioneers their first two-goal lead of the series.

After a Charlie Turner empty netter, the Pioneers celebrated their ninth straight Gibson Cup series win. Matt Turunen earned the win in net, stopping 37 of the 41 shots he faced. He finished the series allowing only 11 goals on 128 Calumet shots.

The Gibson Cup win was the Pioneers 25th in team history.
