Overtime thriller goes to Pioneers - Game three is Tuesday

Only once in the last decade has the Gibson Cup Series not gone to three games, and on Saturday night at the Calumet Colosseum Portage Lake Pioneers forward Alex Roy made sure the 2017 Gibson Cup would keep that tradition alive.

Roy scored the overtime winner 8:57 into the second overtime period on a rebound off a shot by Hunter Kero, much to the disappointment of the 800+ fans that packed the Colosseum.
Calumet got on the board first once again Saturday night as Logan Rastello netted one from a sharp angle in the first period. After a Tyler Sarazin point shot tied the game up, Rastello’s line was up to it once again, this time Wayne Hyrkas was the goal scorer.
That back-and-forth continued as the game wore on. Cody Sivonen tied the game at two. Tyler Loukus scored his third of the series to put Calumet up 3-2. Riley McKay netted a power-play goal late in the third to tie it for the Pioneers and then Josh Harju answered for Calumet to give the home team a 4-3 lead after two periods.
The Pioneers didn’t waste a lot of time in the third period, tying the game at four 3:29 into the frame on Charlie Turner’s second of the series. This one coming on the power play. Both of Turner’s goals in the series have come in the third period – the only two third period goals of the series.
Turner and Kero finished the game with two points for the Pioneers, while Rastello and Mike Babcock each had two points for Calumet. Ryan Patrick stopped 42 of 47 shots in a losing effort, while Matt Turunen stopped 41 to earn the win. The veteran tender who starred for L’Anse High School has stopped 80 of the 87 shots he’s faced the series so far.
Game three is Tuesday night at 7:30 at Dee Stadium in Houghton.
