Wolverines defeat Pioneers in Tuesday night battle
2017-02-21Hockey Week in Calumet started off with a battle between hockey's oldest rivals as the Portage Lake Pioneers visited the Calumet Wolverines Tuesday night at the Calumet Colosseum, and this battle went to the home team by a score of 4-3.
Josh Harju netted the game winner late in the third period as he went end-to-end on the penalty kill and blasted his patented slapshot through Pioneers (10-9-1) goaltender Matt Turunen's glove.
The winner was Harju's second of the night. Isaac Bjorn also had two goals for the Wolverines (8-12-0), his first two-goal game of the season. Five players finished the game with an assist, and Ryan Patrick made 33 saves on 36 shot attempts by the Pioneers. Patrick is now 3-5-0 on the season, and allowing three goals tied his season low.
The Pioneers came in short handed, starting the game with only nine players before a 10th arrived midway through the contest. Charlie Turner paced the visitors with two goals.
The one-goal game was the Wolverines 11th of the season, five more than any other Great Lakes Hockey League team.
The Wolverines will play this weekend at Lakeview Arena in Marquette against the Marquette Mutineers (10-9-0). Both games will begin at 8 p.m.
