Shae Klitzke netted the game winner with 11 seconds left as the Great Lakes Hockey League-leading West Bend Bombers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 4-3 Saturday night at the Calumet Colosseum.
The back-and-forth game looked like it might go the Wolverines (7-12-0) way as Mike Babcock put the team up 3-2 seven minutes into the third period. It was the Wolverines second lead of the game after earning a 2-1 lead on a power play marker by Tyler Loukus in the second.
Both leads would be squashed by the Bombers’ (14-3-0) power play, which finished the game two-for-four. The Bombers had additional chances to end it on the power play in the third period, playing with a man up for four of the final 6:17 of the game. However, the Wolverines penalty kill persevered on those final chances.
Bryan Miller made 40 saves on 44 shots for the Wolverines. Babcock finished with a season-high three points, while Logan Rastello (one goal, one assist) and Alex VanWagner also finished with two points.
A total of 10 of the 19 games the Wolverines have played this season have been one-goal games, that's four more than the next highest (Eagle River, Portage Lake).
The Wolverines are home Tuesday night against arch rival Portage Lake Pioneers as part of Hockey Week in Calumet. The team hits the road next weekend for a pair at Marquette.
