Quick starts don’t hold as Mutineers sweep Wolverines
2017-01-29The Calumet Wolverines owned a 4-0 lead in the second period Friday and a 4-1 lead after one period Saturday, but neither lead would hold as the visiting Marquette Mutineers would go on to win 6-4 Friday and 6-5 Saturday.
The losses drop the Wolverines to 7-10-0, good for seventh in the Great Lakes Hockey League, still nine points up on the final playoff spot over the De Pere Deacons.
Eric Bausano led the Wolverines with two goals Friday night, both of which came in the first period. Mutineers (9-7-0) forward, and GLHL Leading scorer, Dallas McLaughlin finished the game with four goals and five points. In total he tallied nine points on the weekend to strengthen his points lead in the league to a 49 to 32 advantage over the second-leading scorer.
Saturday the Wolverines had four players with two points, including Logan Rastello who ended a nine-game drought with two first-period goals. First-year forward Chris Hoffman tallied 23 penalty minutes in the game. His efforts have also earned him a two-game suspension. The 23 penalty minutes are more than all but one player earned on the team during the 2015-16 season. It was the most single-game penalty minutes since February 14, 2010 when Emmett Bjorn tallied 27 in a 10-1 Wolverines win over the Vernon Hills Capitals.
After a busy start to the season, the Wolverines have a relatively quiet February with only four games. The team is off this weekend before heading to Eagle River to play the Falcons on February 10. The Wolverines next home game is Saturday, February 18 vs. the reigning regular-season champion West Bend Bombers.
