Pioneers earn win in 2016-17 season series opener
2016-12-12The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 6-5 Saturday night at the Dee Stadium. The game was the first of four regular season Great Lakes Hockey League games between hockey’s oldest rivals.
The Pioneers owned a 2-1 lead after the first period, and despite an early second period goal from first-year forward Ethan Larson, the team found itself still down by one after two periods.
The Pioneers upped the lead to 6-3 with goals early in the third before a late Wolverines rally that included Logan Rastello’s second of the night and Logan Frantti’s first goal of the season.
Bryan Miller made 42 saves in a losing effort. The Wolverines head home this weekend for games Friday and Saturday nights against the Mosinee Papermakers.
