Wolverines out to first 2-0 start in 10 years

2016-11-06

The Calumet Wolverines took care of business during opening weekend of the Great Lakes Hockey League season, beating the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 5-4 and Monroe Blues 8-2 at the Calumet Colosseum for the team’s first 2-0 start since the 2006-07 season.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the Ice Dogs Friday before the visitors scored three straight to take a lead of their own. Calumet responded with the tying marker 10 seconds later, and gained the lead for good with 22 seconds remaining in the second period on a marker by Logan Rastello. Eric Bausano added an insurance marker early in the third period that stood as the eventual winner. Ryan Patrick made 36 saves while Rastello and Josh Harju each finished the contest with two points. Calumet got out to another hot start Saturday as the Wolverines owned a 3-0 lead after one period. Despite allowing two Blues goals in the second period, the game was never really in question. Ty Junttila made 34 saves to earn the win, while Rastello netted four points, Bausano and Alex VanWagner had three points each and three players had two. Rastello’s six-point weekend has him in third place in the GLHL. Harju leads the league in PIMs with 14, while newcomer Austin Riipi is second in the league with 10. Junttila’s .940 save percentage currently leads the league.

The Wolverines will look to continue its hot start next weekend as it travels to play at Fox Cities Friday and at West Bend on Saturday. The Wolverines head back home the first weekend of December to host GLHL North Division rival Eagle River.
