A U.P. split to start 2016

2016-01-09

The 2016 calendar year started with a U.P. split this weekend for the Calumet Wolverines as the team visited both Michigan rivals, defeating Marquette 7-4 and falling to Portage Lake 5-4.

The Wolverines (6-5-0) held a 1-0 after the first period Friday and a 2-1 lead after the second, but allowed the Iron Rangers (3-9-0) to tie it up on both occasions before pulling away during the final frame.

Josh Harju and Mike Babcock each had two goals while Logan Rastello finished the contest with a goal and three points. Ty Juntila earned the win in net with 33 saves in his season debut.

The Wolverines jumped out to 1-0 and 2-1 leads Saturday night as well, but the Pioneers (8-3-0) were able to net three goals in a short span early in the second period to pull ahead.

Calumet evened the score at four early in the third period with goals from Joe Hyrkas and Jack Maccani, but Jay Pietila scored the game winner later in the period.

Maccani finished the game with two goals while Rastello and Alex VanWagner each had two points in the game. Ryan Patrick had 23 saves.

The Wolverines are off for nearly two weeks before making the team’s longest road trip of the season playing at Monroe on Friday, January 22 and at Mosinee on January 23.
