2015-12-19

The Calumet Wolverines and Marquette Iron Rangers played to a series split this weekend at the Calumet Colosseum as the Wolverines came out with a 9-6 win Friday before falling 5-3 Saturday.

Calumet jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period Friday, and led by as much as 7-2 in the second period before Marquette netted a couple goals in a failed comeback effort.

The Wolverines got two goals from Justin Scott, Eric Bausano, Levi Erkkila and Eric Mattila in the game, while Jeff Erkkila and Byron Parks each had three points. Ryan Patrick earned the win with 31 saves, while the Wolverines finished with 52 shots.

The Wolverines jumped out to another quick lead Saturday night as Bausano netted a goal 47 seconds into the contest. Tyler Loukus doubled the late in the period, but the Great Lakes Hockey League’s leading scorer, Dallas McLaughlin, cut the lead to one with 30 seconds left.

Marquette used that momentum to control action in the second period, outshooting the Wolverines 18-10 and jumping out to a 5-2 lead.

The Wolverines got one back in the third period with the team’s only power-play goal of the weekend off the stick of Tyson Kauppinen. The loss came despite the Wolverines outshooting the visitors 48-35.

The Wolverines next game is Saturday, December 26 against the Portage Lake Pioneers.
