Wolverines off to best start in more than a decade
2015-12-07The Calumet Wolverines are off to the team’s best start since at least 2005 as they moved to 3-1-0 with a 4-3 overtime win in Mosinee and 9-7 win in Eagle River over the weekend.
Logan Rastello was the hero Friday night against the Papermakers (3-0-1) as he netted the winner 2:53 into overtime. Ryan Patrick, now in his 11th season with the Wolverines, made 52 saves in his first appearance of the young season. Levi Erkkila, Eric Mattila and Alex VanWagner also netted goals for the visitors. VanWagner scored the game-winning goal and paced the Wolverines in points Saturday night against the Falcons (1-3-0) with one goal and three assists, while Levi Erkkila had two goals and Joe Hyrkas added three assists. Bryan Miller got the win in net, his second in as many starts, stopping 42 of the 49 shots he faced.
The win in Eagle River came despite the Wolverines owning a 1-6-1 record in Eagle River dating back to the start of the 2010-11 season. Calumet will continue play on the road next weekend traveling to play the De Pere Deacons (0-2-0) Friday and Fox Cities Ice Dogs (2-2-2) Saturday.
