The Calumet Wolverines fell to Fond du Lac 7-4 and West Bend 12-2 this weekend to finish the Great Lakes Hockey League season 4-15-1, including losing the final six games.
Calumet kept things tight with the Fond du Lac Bears (8-7-1) Friday night during the home team’s annual teddy bear toss night, but the Bears pulled away with a three-goal second period and held that three-goal lead through the end of the game. [Fond du Lac 7, Calumet 4]
Saturday night the Wolverines found themselves down 5-2 after one and 11-2 after two periods before keeping the third period tighter against the second-place Bombers (14-4-0). [West Bend 12, Calumet 2]
The Wolverines are currently third in the league in goals, with rookie Levi Erkkila currently holding the league lead in points with 42. Line mate Logan Rastello is fourth in the scoring race with 37 points. The Wolverines will finish seventh, eighth or ninth in the league standings.
The Wolverines have at least four games remaining, with the possibility of seven. Calumet and Portage Lake will renew the Gibson Cup rivalry March 19-21, with the first game of the best-of-three series at Dee Stadium on Thursday, March 19. The Great Lakes Hockey League tournament will be the following weekend at Dee Stadium.
