Portage Lake sweeps opening weekend
2014-12-07The opening weekend of the 2014-15 Great lakes Hockey League was a downer for the Calumet Wolverines, as they fell 7-3 and 5-3 to the Portage Lake Pioneers.
Calumet was outplayed early and often in the losses, including falling behind 3-0 in the first period of the first game. Calumet battled back in the second and third, including back-to-back power play goals to get back within two early in the third period.
Logan Rastello, Levi Erkkila and Alex VanWagner each netted goals for the Wolverines, while Ryan Patrick made 26 saves.
The Wolverines were within a goal for most of the second game, but a late insurance goal by the Pioneers ended the Wolverines comeback hopes.
Rastello, Erkkila and Byron Parks all scored in the contest, while Ryan Patrick made 41 saves. The Wolverines finished the weekend three of four on the power play.
The Wolverines are now off for a weekend before a road trip to the Fox Cities area to play the Fox Cities Ice Dogs and De Pere Deacons Dec. 19-20.
