Pioneers and Wolverines renew hockey’s oldest rivalry this weekend

2014-12-03

The oldest rivalry in all of hockey is about to be renewed for the 2014-15 hockey season. The Calumet Wolverines and Portage Lake Pioneers will battle Friday and Saturday nights to begin both team’s Great Lakes Hockey League campaigns.

Puck drop for both nights is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday’s game will be in Calumet, Saturday in Houghton. Tickets will be available at the door.

The team’s met a total of eight times last year, with the Pioneers winning seven of the games, including two of three in the Gibson Cup series games, the playoff matchup and all four regular season games.

Calumet is returning many of its top players, including veteran goaltender Ryan Patrick who has 59 wins in his nine GLHL seasons, and last year’s leading scorers Jeff Erkkila (17 goals, 45 points) and Logan Rastello (18 goals, 39 points).

The Pioneers will be led in net to begin the season by goaltender Matt Messina, who’s established an impressive 17-7-1 record with the Pioneers over the past three seasons, and last year’s leading scorers Ryan Sullivan (24 goals, 48 points) and Charlie Turner (17 goals, 35 points).
