Wolverines hold on for 8-6 win over Wolfpack
2014-11-14The Calumet Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and withstood a wild third period to earn an 8-6 exhibition victory over the Michigan Tech Wolfpack Thursday night.
The Wolverines jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period with back-to-back goals by Jesse Patrick, who has rejoined the Wolverines after not playing even a game during the 2013-14 season.
Eric Mattila made the lead 3-0 in the second period with his first ever goal with the Wolverines. Second-year goaltened Jason Rank earned the win with 37 saves. Through two periods he had 26, and looked to be in control.
Then things got hairy. The MTU Wolfpack scored six goals itn the third period, including two by Tyler Szabo. However, the visitors were never able to get the equalizer as Calumet responded each time.
Defensemen Mike babcock and Josh Harju responded early, and Eric Bausano scored two backhand goals to keep the Wolverines lead. Alex VanWagner added an empty netter as time expired.
The Wolverines are now off until Dec. 5 when they being their Great Lakes Hockey League schedule by renewing hockey's oldest rivalry by hosting the Portage Lake Pioneers.
